It derives from the Arabic word <i>ta\u1e63awwuf<\/i>, a term used since the 8th century to designate this spiritual teaching of Islam.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The etymology of the term is still subject to debate. Some believe it derives from the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u1e63\u016bf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cwool\u201d in Arabic) in reference to the modest woven woolen garment worn by the Prophet of Islam and his disciples in the 7th century, a chosen austerity to purify their souls. Others suggest that it is rooted in the Arabic word for limpidity and clarity (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saf\u0101<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or to refer to the Prophet\u2019s followers (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ahl as-suffa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthe people of the bench\u201d in Arabic).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the first Sufi masters can be traced back to the earliest days of Islam, the profound wisdom of Sufism is described by its masters as something that has existed from the very beginning of humanity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The museum\u2019s collection has been assembled over the past few decades by the MTO Shahmaghsoudi\u00ae school.
