This project forms part of artist Paula Valero’s ongoing research into the resonances between Sufi culture and cante jondo — the deep song of flamenco. It explores their shared power to invoke the living forces of ancestry, nature, the earth, water sources, and the invisible.
Islamic communities of Al-Andalus left a profound and lasting imprint on musical traditions that later developed into flamenco, particularly in the cante jondo tradition. Their influence endures in many of the songs still passed down today, and in the fundamental rhythms and structures of flamenco — especially in the siguiriya and the soleá, two of its oldest and most emotionally charged forms.
Together with dancer Paula Comitre and singer Rocío Luna, the artist seeks to summon the memory of women — those who have safeguarded transmission, preserving songs, gestures, and stories across generations. Through their care and resilience, flamenco has endured as a space of resistance, carrying within it a plural heritage Muslim-Andalusian, Romani — often pushed to the margins, but never extinguished.
As the performers move through the museum to the deep, haunting rhythms of cante jondo, the action becomes a ritual of invocation and remembrance — a living tribute to those whose voices have shaped and sustained a culture.
