In Sufi tradition, samāʿ means “audition.” Throughout the history of Sufism, no one is more closely associated with samāʿ than the 13th-century Sufi and poet Rumi. Steeped in devotion and meditation, this exercise combines singing, music, and physical performance, and is practiced by men and women alike. Led by the MTO ensemble Zendeh Delan®, this workshop / performance offers a unique opportunity to discover the spiritual practice of samāʿ, accompanied by traditional Sufi music and a trio of instruments comprising tar, daf, and harp. The presentation is introduced by a brief explanation of samāʿ movements and their meaning.
