Haroon Mirza b. 1977, London; lives and works in London
Haroon Mirza’s “adisciplinary” practice explores the interactions and frictions between sound, light and electric current. He creates sculptures, performances and immersive installations that engage the viewer’s awareness of their own experience. An advocate of interference, he deliberately creates situations in which connections intersect and disrupt one another. Defining himself as a composer, he manipulates his primary medium, electricity – an invisible and unstable natural phenomenon. Fascinated by waves, from those of the ocean to neural oscillations, from sound waves to the electromagnetic spectrum, Mirza invites us to reconsider perception and to question cultural categories, theological tropes and the notion of truth in relation to belief.
Mirza graduated from Winchester School of Art, Goldsmiths College and Chelsea College of Art and Design, and has exhibited internationally, notably at Ikon Gallery (Birmingham) and Museum Tinguely (Basel). He has participated in numerous biennials, including the Venice Biennale (2011), where he was awarded the Silver Lion.
He is the recipient of several international awards, including the Northern Art Prize, the Zurich Art Prize and the Calder Art Prize.
