Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien

Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien (born 1990) lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Paris-Cergy in 2016. The artist develops a multidisciplinary practice incorporating textiles, drawings, sculpture, photography, painting and video performance, printmaking and installation. Drawing on the craft traditions and mythologies of her Akan and Guadeloupean heritage she explores the notions of femininity, cosmos and visual poetry. Having grown up in the Ivory Coast, Guadeloupe and France, she uses raffia, cotton, vegetable leather, glass, shells and copper in her assemblages. Through these materials, she connects traditions, mythologies and contemporary societies, as well as the lives of those who navigate them whether they are integrated within them or at the margins. Viewing her practice as an ongoing exploration of women’s intersectional positions, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien weaves ephemeral narratives of perpetual renewal, both as witnesses and traces of plural histories.

The artist recently exhibited her works in Cartographies for After the End (2025) at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, and has also exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2023) and the Institut français in Berlin (2022). She is currently in residence at Gasworks in London, at TRAMé[e]S in Angers, and at the Villa Médicis. Her work can currently be found in her solo exhibitions at the CAC La Traverse and Gasworks London. She is represented by Galerie Cécile Fakhoury (Abidjan, Dakar and Paris).
